Martin Hamm Obituary

Martin Hamm was born in 1933 in Blumenhof, SK. Two years later his family moved to Tofield in search of better farmland. He attended Woodlawn School until Grade Eight, but had to take over the farm due to his father's failing health. After his fathers’ untimely death, Martin took over the family farm.

He met Agnes Fast at the Tofield Gospel Church, after Agnes moved with her family to Ryley. They were later married on April 15, 1967. They made the old farm house in Tofield their home. Karen and Brian were born there, and he continued to farm there for six years. They moved to the farm south of Ryley in 1973, where Cameron was born. Martin and Agnes farmed on good cropland with range cattle, and after 51 years of farming, Dad retired and they moved to Tofield.

Singing and writing poetry was a big part of Martin’s life. He led the church choir in Tofield for seven years and he continued on with the Tofield Men’s Chorus and the Lamplighter’s male quartet in his retirement.

In 2012, Martin had a major stroke, and his mobility and right arm function were severely limited. Six years later they moved into Sunshine Villa in Tofield where they lived until he had a significant health setback this past December.

With both Agnes and Martin needing extra care, it was determined that they could live at Westview Care Community in Linden, AB. Mom and Dad moved there together in January 2025. But Martin’s health did not improve much, and then on February 26, at the age of 91, he was released peacefully from his earthly body into the arms of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

He leaves behind to mourn his family and countless friends and church family. He is survived by his wife, Agnes Hamm, his children; Karen (John), Brian (Michelle), and Cameron (Valerie). His grandchildren; Malaina, Calan, Lauren, Aleah, Noah, Elly and JoJo. He was predeceased by his parents, David and Katharina Hamm, his siblings; John, Tina, Mary, Susie, Elizabeth and Margaret, and his son-in-law, Daniel Vert.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at 1 p.m. at the Good News Community Church, 5318-51 St., in Ryley, Alberta.

In lieu of flowers and if so desired, memorial contributions can be made to Village Missions of Canada, Fraser Valley Gleaners Society, Westview Care Community or the Tofield Sunshine Villa.
