Don Uglem

Don Uglem, son of John and Stella Uglem, was born on July 5, 1934, in Bawlf. He passed away on January 29, 2023, at the age of 88 years.

Don Grew up on a farm 3 miles northeast of Bawlf with his sister Lois and brothers Larry and Merle. He started school at Scandia then Allied School, finishing in Bawlf. Don married Sonja Olson in 1960 and they built their home in Bawlf (where they lived until 2015). Don met Sonja in Calgary while Don was taking mechanics and welding at SAIT and Sonja was studying to be an RN at the Calgary General Hospital. Don and Sonja raised four children and enjoyed watching their family grow. Family and faith were an important part of Don’s life, and he prioritized serving others, giving to the church and making sure every day started with a prayer and a devotion.

Don was a proud resident of the Village of Bawlf and gave back to his community in a variety of ways including being a business owner, Councillor, Deputy Mayor, Mayor, Fire Chief and managing the village’s water and sewer system. He loved his community and the people he service Don rarely sat still, enjoying woodworking, gardening, bird watching, puzzling, listening to gospel music and a cold can of Pepsi.

He is survived by Sonja, his loving wife of 63 years; children Joanne (Michael), Elaine (Keith), Dwayne (Janell), Leanne (Terry); grandchildren Travis (Brittany), Tiffany, Nathan (Rachael), Nicole (Matt), Naomi (Nathan), Jordan, Amy (Caleb), Victoria (Tayler), Carlie, Lindsey, Carter; great-grandchildren Hudson, Gabe, Rhett, Graeme, Brooks, Jack; brothers Larry (Carol) and Merle (Joey) and brother-in-law Lloyd.

Don was predeceased by his sister Lois Hagen.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 13, 2023 at CityLights Church in Camrose (4920 48 Street), with Pastor Richard Schultz officiating.  Interment will take place at the Bawlf Cemetery.
