Arnold Baker of Camrose, formerly of Edberg, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on June 25, 2023.
He is survived by his wife Joan (Robinson), children Kevin Baker and Sheila (Darren) Herle, grandchildren Riki, Kaine, Carla, Kazimir, Mika, Luke, Effy, Rhys & Rhiana; as well as 9 great-grandchildren.
Arnold was born in Neepawa, Manitoba. He and Joan retired to Camrose in 1993, and lived for several years in the Hart House with Joan's mother. In his new home, in this beautiful town, every day he would walk around the lake or strap on skies or snowshoes and take to the creekside trails.
Arnold loved being in the mountains, skiing, hiking, and camping; as well as spending time with his family. He had great care and concern for the environment. He was a reader and a writer; he thought and argued passionately about the difficult issues of our time. Several of his letters appeared in this newspaper. People who knew him will remember a great, serious and good-humoured conversationalist and story-teller.
He had been an engineer, a farmer and a math teacher, and was always designing something -- a flying machine, a utopian community. He built and sailed a ship across Pigeon Lake, from Silver Beach to Ma-Me-O.
The family will hold a private celebration of his life.
