In Alberta, earth burial (interment) is the most commonly used method of final disposition. The burial must take place in a registered cemetery. Most cemeteries require an outer box made of concrete or wood that the casket will be lowered into. Sealing, water-tight and air-tight vaults are readily available which prevent outside elements from entering the vault.
Most cemeteries require at minimum a concrete outer box (liner) to help fulfill the requirements of maintenance and perpetual care. The concrete box controls future settling of the grave. Also, since graves are no longer dug by hand, the concrete will protect existing buried remains from disturbance from a machine when nearby graves are being dug.
